Minister Bennett announced last week that new regulations are coming into force on August 1, 2023 which will require health warnings to be printed directly on individual cigarettes.
These regulations will be implemented through a phased approach, with most measures expected to be seen on the Canadian market within the year.
The intent of these new Tobacco Products Appearance, Packaging and Labelling Regulations is to be part of our government’s efforts to help adults who smoke to quit, to protect youth and non-tobacco users from nicotine addiction and to further reduce the appeal of tobacco. It will also make it nearly impossible to avoid health warnings altogether. These regulations also help support Canada’s Tobacco Strategy and target of less than 5% tobacco use by 2035.
