Happy Canadian Multiculturalism Day
June 27, 2023

June 27th marks Canadian Multiculturalism Day, a day which affirms our country’s commitment to fostering an inclusive society where people from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions are welcomed and respected. It is also a day that honours the many cultural communities that help build a strong and vibrant Canadian society.

On October 8th, 1971, Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau declared in the House of Commons of Canada that, after much deliberation, the policies of bilingualism and multiculturalism would be implemented in Canada. With that, Canada became the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy. This led to the passage of Canadian Multiculturalism Act of 1985, which affirms the policy of the Government of Canada to ensure that every Canadian receives equal treatment by the government which respects and celebrates diversity.

Let’s take this opportunity to celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches Canada collectively and reaffirm our commitment to equity, inclusion, and mutual respect. Let’s also recognize the immense contributions made by Canadians from all backgrounds. Happy Canadian Multiculturalism Day!
